Is Your Conscience Joined to the Holy Spirit?
I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit (Romans 9:1NKJV).
Every human being has a conscience. The voice inside your head that says “that’s right” or “this is wrong” is an innate sense. When you violate your conscience, you feel condemned and ashamed. Your “inner voice” informs you whether something is morally good or bad. Your conscience develops in childhood through the influence of your environment and upbringing. You may have had similar experiences as others and comparable parental influence, but your conscience is not the same as another because of your profound uniqueness.
Since the human conscience can change over the test of time it cannot have your total allegiance. The voice of your conscience before renewed to the Word of God, is a faulty pointer to God’s will for you. As you mature and grow in your faith in Christ your conscience will not stay the same. While you renew your mind to the word of God you will look at things through the perspective of the fear of God rather than the fear of man. You will align your conscience with God’s Word, so it doesn’t condemn you unnecessarily. Who has the final word in your life? The Holy Spirit does. He is always in perfect agreement with God’s word and His will.
When you fail the grace of God you have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ. If you confess your sins to God, the Lord is faithful to forgive you and cleanse you from all unrighteousness. When you ask forgiveness and still feel guilty you may come up with all kinds of things to make up for what you did wrong. You then are operating in unbelief and are turning to a dead work that is meaningless. God can help you in this area so that the Holy Spirit guides your inner voice in the right direction. Root yourself in the love of Jesus Christ and abide in His word. God’s Word will point you in the right direction. Let the Holy Spirit be your guide and your conscience will l learn to agree with Him.
