The Death Angel Will Pass Over

When the LORD goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down (Ex. 12:23).

Passover is sacred to every Jewish believer. It memorializes their liberation from 400 years of slavery in Egypt and their beginning as the nation of Israel. Moses told Pharaoh to “let his people go,” but Pharaoh rebuffed him. God sent ten plagues to induce Pharaoh to release His people. The 10th plague destroyed every firstborn Egyptian son. The Jews, obeying God’s instruction, smeared their doorposts with blood from a sacrificial lamb, and when the death angel saw it, he passed over each household.

Regardless of our religious background or ethnicity, we all need a Passover in our lives. We all need redemption. Deliverance from the oppression of this world due to sin is possible. Jesus is our Passover lamb. His blood smeared over our hearts cleanses us from all unrighteousness. The devil will accuse you. He will relentlessly prosecute you. He will cry day and night that you are guilty and deserve death. But the blood of Christ is our exculpatory evidence that says, “We are blameless.” Jesus shed His blood for the whole world.

As COVID-19 plagues the world, we need to pause and think of the efficacy of the blood of Jesus. The old hymn, “Power in the Blood,” still rings true. Let’s not only sing it lets decree and declare it over our lives, community, state, nation, and the whole world. Resurrection Sunday is here, and victory over death is ours!
