The Look of Love

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal (2 Cor. 4:18).

At what are you looking? To what are your eyes attracted? Fixing your eyes on what is pure and lovely can have a soothing effect on your physical body and mind. Gazing upon a beautiful sunrise, the face of a sleeping child or the clear blue sky can ease the stress of your mind. If we choose to look at raw or false images, our body and mind will reap adverse reactions.

We also have unseen eyes. Of what should they gaze upon? God created the eyes of our mind to see too. He made them to look upon unseen things. The eyes of our understanding have power for good or evil. If we are born again, surrendered to Jesus Christ, our Savior, we have access to the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. We can see beyond this earthly realm as we ponder the scripture and the things of heaven.

The old hymn “Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face, and the things of this world will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace” is correct. The song is referring to the eyes of your understanding or imagination. Jesus is always with you though you cannot see him with your physical eyes. Just as He is unseen, you can see Him with the hidden eyes of your heart. As you look upon Him, the author and finisher of your faith, you will change not through your hard-fought effort but through his grace and inner power. You will become like him for you are His and He is yours!
